Watch out MINI Cooper and Opel Corsa, the supermini segment just got a notch hotter. Alfa Romeo has been taunting us for months with numerous pre-releases, but today they have finally released a detailed press kit (on the following 8 pages) and 42 fresh photos.
Despite a naming contest which put “Furiosa” as the provisional name, Alfa went ahead with their own. Based on the MiTo's design and production locations of Milan and Torino (Turin), respectively, abbreviations of both cities gives us, MiTo.
Positioned as the stylistic mothership for the brand, the Alfa 8C Competizione serves as the stylistic source from which the MiTo borrows certain traits, particularly noticeable in the shape of the headlights and the LED tail lights.
Other interesting design traits of the MiTo include bulging wheel arches that include big wheels and muscular rear wings. Also, a deep sculpted furrow flows along the lower portions of the door and front leg of the quarter panel making the side skirt rocker appear bulkier and aggressive - all of this character and muscle without detracting from the smooth flowing lines.
Targeted to 18 to 30 year old men and women, the MiTo receives two petrol engines and one turbo diesel at launch, all available with 6-speed manual transmission only.
The entry level 1.4-liter has been engineered to produce 78 bhp (58 kW) at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 125 Nm at 4250 rpm, which is in accordance with new legislation in Italy so new drivers who have recently passed their driving test can drive the MiTo. The MiTo 1.4 takes 12.3 seconds to 100 km/h and top speed is 165 km/h.
The new 1.4 16v turbo engine makes 155 bhp (114 kW) at 5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 206 Nm. The 155 bhp is achieved at just 2000 rpm but an extra 24 Nm is produced at 3000 rpm by activating the Dynamic Driving Mode through the Alfa D.N.A switch. 0 -100 km/h takes 8.0 seconds with a top speed of 215 km/h.
Lastly, the 120 bhp 1.6-liter JTDM is a torque monster producing 280 Nm available at 1500 rpm with a maximum 320 Nm at 1750 rpm. 0 to 100 km/h comes in just 9.9 seconds and the top speed 198 km/h.
Only available as a three-door coupe, the MiTo will be launched globally in stages in July except for North America. Given the current retreat from large vehicles and SUVs in the states, there's a good chance the MiTo may find its way to American shores after all.
